Happy Canada Day!

Hope you had a Happy Canada Day! We celebrated with a delicious backyard BBQ. I got to help clean up the snacks that had been dropped around the yard–happy days!!! It was a double celebration weekend for some of us as a neighbourhood water ban has been lifted. We are watering our lawn, washing the car, and playing in the baby pool. Which means I get to take plenty of naps, one of my favorite things. Remember to enjoy life’s simple pleasures and not just wait for the holidays to play and nap. Happy summer!

Kenny’s Korner to June 2011

Sleep – our family has missed a lot of sleep over the past year.

Everyone in this home has realized the importance of naps…anywhere and anytime we all take naps.
They’re refreshing, enjoyable, and good for you. Have a nap today!

"SCT Guard Dog on Duty!"

I fulfilled many roles before my human sister was born: walking companion, entertainer, snuggler, big kisser, and floor cleaner, just to name a few. But now I have the most important job of all – guard dog! Whenever a stranger walks too close to Violet I let out a warning growl and they always back off. And if she is napping without a Mama or a Dada nearby I lie beside her and keep a watchful eye. It’s a tough job, but someone has got to guard the baby!

Guard Dog!

I’m back!

I'm Back!!!!!

After a se

ven month sabbatical I am returning to Kenny’s Korner. This month I am happy to announce my return and introduce my new human sister, Violet. A definite improvement over ChiChi – she’s cute, enjoys long naps, and cannot move quick enough to get me!

Spa Time!Brrr! It’s been so chilly here in O-town. Now, I love the snow and love to go out a couple of times a day to jump in the snow banks and play. But the cold started to get me down. It’s great when the sun is out, but those days when it gets grey and dull give me the blues. My pick-me-up was a day at the doggy spa. I got brushed, bathed, clipped and pampered. Now I’m heading into February feeling a million bucks. So if you need a pick-me-up I highly recommend some pampering. Personally, I like a little regular Reflexology and of course, you can’t beat a Reiki session. And there is always a lovely aromatherapy massage to lift your spirits and make you feel Absolutely Fabulous!

Kenny among Stockings

Hey, hey, hey!

It’s Spenny here, starting off the year with a quick note as my brother Kenny continues his sabbatical. Life was good in December. I love the fun of getting ready for Christmas: decorating the house, catching the goodies being baked that fall off the kitchen counter, getting extra treats and generally being around people who are feeling good and being happy. It tends to make me feel rather sad when January arrives and all the stuff is put away.

New Year Resolutions

"SCT Happy New Year Everyone!"

So this year my resolution is to continue feeling good! Woof! I am enjoying my walks, even though it’s pretty chilly here in Ottawa. I do love the snow and it’s all sparkly, so that makes me feel good. I also noticed I put on a few pounds over the holidays, so plugging hard to get through the snow is feeling great too! I’m appreciating the gifts that I got on Christmas Day. I particularly enjoyed the hand-made dog biscuits from Nana J and still have a couple snuck away for a rainy day…shh, don’t tell ChiChi where I hid them. And I’m playing hard at keeping Emma cheery through the winter days with lots of extra snuggles and licks.
This year I picked a really easy resolution to keep.
Maybe I’ll just make living a fun and cheerful life a new habit. Happy New Year!!!

Cats & Babies…hhmmmmm and Bullies

One of the things that I learned this month was that cats and babies don’t mix too well. ChiChi used to live with Kenny and when the new baby came she had to move to my house for a while.

And now, she’s not going back. It seems that my brother didn’t really get along with ChiChi too well. She was always hanging around waiting to jump on him or to box him into a corner so he couldn’t get out. Well, one thing you should know about Kenny is that he is pretty small and a bit of a light weight. On the other hand ChiChi is big, tough and has some anger management issues. So, you can imagine I wasn’t too happy about this move! Turns out that ChiChi doesn’t bully me the same way she bullies Kenny. I’m bigger than Kenny and I decided I wasn’t going to put up with any of her nonsense. As soon as she started into her tricks I decided to just ignore her. And now, we are living in harmony quite nicely. She’s stopped her bullying ways!!! And you know, we sometimes even take a nap together now…who knew this would be possible.

So, another thing I learned this month is to not let bullies push you around. If you don’t have a big brother or sister to help, then go to talk to someone. You don’t have to be the hero, but you don’t have to let bullies push you around either. Tell someone who can help you out…and everyone will be happier.

Happy Halloween!"SCT Mascot Spenny at Halloween"

A little of what you fancy does you good…okay, so I didn’t fancy getting dressed up for Halloween…but I did want to get into all those little dog-bone shaped treats Emma bought me. So, I paid the price and here’s my photo and I’m feeling quite silly but I got my treats. So this month’s lesson, sometimes we have to pay the price to get what we want AND a little of what you fancy does you good!!!

Walking is fun!

Hey, hey, hey! It’s me Spenny, with this month’s news from the wonderful world of pets. Well, since all the excitement of the new baby it’s been a busy time for me and my little brother Kenny. And Kenny is now living in the ‘burbs so I don’t get to play with him so often. "SCT Kenny and Spenny in Summer"This had me paying more attention to my walks this last month or so. I take Emma out for a long walk along the canal in Ottawa quite regularly. I’ve noticed that lots of people and pets enjoy the walk along the canal. I’ve been appreciating the change of scenery as the Fall arrives, with the leaves changing colors and different flowers growing along the way. And it struck me one day that I’m really enjoying being a sight-seer in my own city. So, I thought I’d let you know and invite you to join in this fun game. Go for a walk in a popular tourist area of your city, town or country-side and take in the sights, sounds and of course, the smells. Often we just don’t appreciate where we live the same way as visitors. Go ahead; go for a nice long walk in your home town and enjoy it like a visitor. You’ll be glad you did!

Hey, hey! It’s Spenny here, stepping in for brother Kenny or K-Dog as I call him.

Kenny’s Korner is gonna be Spenny Speaks

for the next few months. K-Dog has gone and got himself into a pickle this time! He has a new baby in the house. And a new house to deal with too.

"Spenny Speaks fun column SCT"But let me tell you about last month and what we learned. K-Dog was dropped off at my house early one morning. We were sooo excited to hang-out. We ran, we played, we barked and we had a great time: for a couple of days. Then I kinda got fed-up with having to share all my stuff and all my hugs and kisses from Emma. Grrrr! I was ready for K-Dog to go home and he was ready to go, but no-one was asking what we wanted. So we started to pick fights. Not bad ones, but we tore up a pillow and trashed a bed-spread! Emma got mad and nobody was getting too much of the hugs and kisses. So, K-Dog and I started to feel sorry for ourselves and we were good little buddies. We stopped playing-up and started to appreciate Emma and our lovely home. And we even found that we didn’t mind sharing too much. When K-Dog went home I was sad to see him go, but I was also happy to have Emma all to myself again.

It’s great to have my brother come to stay and we both learned to appreciate each other and Emma. I am looking forward to going to visit K-Dog is his new home. I met the new baby. She smells alright!

I’m so excited!!

I have a new human sibling.. a lovely baby girl whose name is Violet!! My mom and dad are very Proud..

Beat the Heat

Beat the heatDuring the warm summer months, Kenny is always trying to stay cool; especially in an attic apartment without central air conditioning. He stays hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day and night. When he is outside he plays in the shade and naps in the dirt by digging a hole in the flower bed. Finally, he keeps his physical activity to a minimum on very sunny and humid days. All these tips help Kenny avoid dehydration, over heating and/or exhaustion. Keep Cool !

From his new favourite position in the window, Kenny guards the house and catches any breeze fortunate to blow his way

Helping the Pregnant Lady

Helping the Pregnant LadyKenny has been honing his skills on the many ways a dog can help a pregnant lady. Cuddles are essential, especially during teary moments and when no one else is home. At bedtime, it is best to sleep on the opposite side of the bed because legs can flail during uncomfortable moments. Kenny has also been pulling less on the leash during walks, and has adapted to the new slower pace. Other helping strategies include: pooping on higher ground so there is less bending down, respecting the need for the occasional ice cream bar and not begging for those special treats, sitting still for grooming, and bringing goodies onto the bed (ie. slippers, Kleenex) which results in less chasing around the apartment for the retrieval of these items. Kudos to Kenny!

Spring Cleaning

With the arrival of spring and the need for more space, our family has started spring cleaning the apartment.Kenny & ChiChi relaxing Kenny is having a marvellous time for a number of reasons.

Spring cleaning has unearthed forgotten items such as raw hide bones and rope toys. Moving around furniture has uncovered yummy and fun to chase dust bunnies and other bits of lint and dirt. After rearranging and purging there is more room to play, especially indoor fetch. And of course, spring cleaning is helpful for Kenny’s folks as well.

Clearing and cleaning has created additional space, a cleaner living area, and some donations for those less fortunate. Happy Spring!

Happy Dog

Kenny is a Happy DogFollowing in the footsteps of Nana J, Kenny has determined the top five ways to be a happy puppy.
1. Family Time – Spending time with the family is the number one way to achieve happiness. Some of Kenny’s favourite times include playing fetch, sleeping in on the weekend, and cuddle time.
2. Treats – Kenny loves to receive treats for any reason, at any time and on any day. Inhaling dog treats, cat treats or human treats bring great joy to a puppy’s life.
3. Bedtime – Bedtime makes Kenny happy. It is a superb feeling to climb into bed with the folks and Chichi.
4. Toys – Dog toys are fantastic part of Kenny’s life. Some of his favourites include chewing rawhide, chewing rawhide and of course chewing rawhide.
5. Long Walks – Obviously this is only applicable during the warmer months. There is nothing more relaxing and rejuvenating than a long walk.
Enjoy your happiness!

OKenny Sitbedience School

It is a short piece for March because Kenny has been a super busy doggie. Kenny started obedience school this month and it has been a learning curve for the entire family. Prioritizing the skills ‘sit’ and ‘heal’, in this picture Kenny demonstrates the sit.

Resolutions

kenny and Chi ChiKenny has not set any personal resolutions for 2010; he is dedicating himself to helping Chichi achieve her annual resolution for the first time. For each of her five years, Chichi has set the objective of weight loss. However her need for cat food, treats and scraps overtakes this goal every time. And each year the annual check up with the vet results in the same speech about reduced food portions and the danger of obesity in cats.
Kenny is helping Chichi by walking her through Nana’s four steps: accept, decide, action and follow through.
1. Chichi is accepting who she is (mostly crabby), as well as her body image. Although her whiskers are long and her belly jiggles when she moves, her fur is soft and her colouring is beautiful. Chichi has begun to accept all the parts of her body. 2. Together they have decided that the change she needs to make is to beg less for food. Chichi is fed one scoop after work, and one scoop before bed. However she meows and howls for food anytime someone walks in the kitchen. If she begs less, scraps are less likely to be doled out, extra kibbles will not be added to her bowl and treats will not be supplied by visitors who think she is being starved. 3. Starting January 1st 2010 Chichi will be taking action, and Kenny will be her support. Together they are going to beg less – Chichi will meow less in the kitchen and Kenny will quit trying to climb the leg of the table during dinner. 4. For the final step, Kenny is going to assist Chichi in striving towards her goal every day.
This time next year Chichi will look back at a successful year and thank her brother for all the help and support!

Dear Santa:

I have been a very good dog this year. I kept my mum company while she was off sick from work with the flu.Merry Christmas Everyone! I only had two indoor accidents during the entire year (Grandmaman’s house does not count because of overexcitement). I behaved appropriately with the dog sitter while my folks enjoyed their honeymoon. I gave all the dogs in the neighbourhood big kisses and sniffs whenever we met them on the street. I tried my best not to eat Chichi’s dinner and her kitty litter. I refrained from destroying furniture and chewing another hole in the bed comforter. And finally, I submitted all of my Kenny’s Korner messages before the deadline. That being said, I would love to see the following items underneath the Christmas tree: rawhide bones, small stuffed animals with squeakers (any animal will do, but monkeys and bunnies are preferred), delicious cat treats and rope toys. Travel safely. Love Kenny

PS. My mum would like something with sparkly diamonds and she has also been good.
PPS. My brother Spenny was quite naughty!

Turn your negatives into POSITIVES!

Kenny & ChichiKenny is taking Nana’s advice to heart this month and is turning a negative thought into something positive. He is sharing his two favourite examples.
Instead of hanging out and watching movies on a Sunday, mum and dad have been taking off for a few hours in the afternoon. At first this was upsetting and he could not believe they would abandon him on a regular basis. Then they took him to the model home of the townhouse they are buying and he realized that when they are gone, good things are happening. Now when they leave on a Sunday, he takes a nap and dreams about new space, friendly neighbours and unmarked hydrants.
Chichi, the older cat sister, will often terrorize Kenny with claws and sudden attacks from hidden places. Always a negative in his life, he has created some positives out of their relationship. Chichi keeps him on his toes, ensures he gets enough exercise in the apartment and makes a great teammate for overtaking the bed in the middle of the night.
So this month Kenny is advising everyone to turn their negatives into positives!

I'm the cutest pumpkin ever!!

Happy Halloween
from Kenny!

Mom & Dad just got home from their honeymoon.. I now she’ll have more to say next month!
Psst:( They look really happy- even if they don’t have tails to wag)

Kenny knows that exercise is an essential part of overall health for both humans and animals. During his life he has learned a key factor that leads to successful exercise and he is happy to share it with all.Kenny and family on a walk
Getting over the initial hump is his important tip. At first, when the leash appears, Kenny does not want to go outside for a walk. He will run for cover and cower away from the beasty harness. However, once he gets over the initial dread and we start walking down the street he realizes that walking is great. Not only is it a fun form of exercise, he garners these additional benefits: visits with other dogs, praises from humans, sniffs of good smells, fresh air and a benefit to his heath and well being.
In sum, once you force yourself to start, exercise can be fun and rewarding in more ways than one. And Kenny sure does love his walks!

Kenny enjoying a bit of Sun!

This month Kenny’s message is short and sweet. Enjoy the summer! Spend time with friends and family. Relax, recharge and re-energize. Kenny certainly has been enjoying himself, and is feeling and looking good!

Kenny gets a bathThe ever so chic Kenny is up-to-date with today’s beauty and green trends. Since his first bath in the kitchen sink, he has been accustomed to all natural products. Spring showers and summer thunderstorms cause dirt and muck in all of the best outdoor playing venues, and Kenny’s locks often look more brown than blonde. Even when it’s not wet outside, after a good romp in the grass he is usually covered in green grass stains – and not all green is good! There are many natural pet products available on the market. Kenny uses all natural wipes for dirty spots, and these are good for the cat too. Much to his chagrin, on really mucky days, Kenny requires a visit to the kitchen sink. He uses an all natural shampoo that is made without synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals. These products are better for the environment, and also for himself. They are hypoallergenic, cause less skin irritation and are milder for the eyes (if the unthinkable happens) and ears. Being green can be beautiful, and Kenny is definitely both!

Going green can be a lot of fun!
Kenny likes to go for a drive In the recent burst of warm weather, Kenny has discovered the beauty of driving with the windows down. Luckily the pure joy associated with hanging his head out the window, eyes squinted shut outweighs the negatives of a bad hair day. It is safe to assume that as the weather gets warmer, using the air conditioning in the car will be an unlikely option.
In our household, we have started walking instead of driving when we run our errands. Although all stores are not puppy friendly, we are quickly determining where we are and are not allowed. Kenny loves the walking adventures, as well as the attention received from both customers and employees. Walking instead of driving is better for the environment, and the health of humans and furry four legged creatures.
Going green is all about small steps to help the environment, and Kenny is certainly doing his part!
In other news, Kenny turned one year in May. He celebrated with a car ride, playing with his bro, and eating lots of carrots

Every small step has a positive impact!

In the spirit of SCT going green, Kenny and his cat sister Chichi decided to demonstrate the brilliance of reusable cloth or PP woven fabric bags.

These bags are an eco-friendly choice for shopping and they are stronger than the regular grocery store plastic bag. Tried, tested and true multiple times by carrying around the 15 pound kitty cat.Kenny and ChiChi go eco-bags!

Of course, these reusable bags are not fit for every situation. If  Kenny lives to the age of 15 years and maintains his active digestive system, we will use 16,425 bags just for picking up his number twos. Instead of using plastic store bags, we buy small, biodegradable plastic bags which are better for the environment.

And obviously these reusable eco-friendly bags are lots of fun! Chichi jumps in them every time the groceries are unpacked, and what ChiChi likes, Kenny loves!

Taking time for activities you enjoy is important for overall health and well-being, and it helps maintain balance in your life.
Kenny's a Canadiens fan!Being a puppy is hard work! Kenny is kept busy with an array of activities such as: chewing rawhide bones, licking Mummy’s face clean, using his mouth to vacuum the kitchen floor during meal time and avoiding Chichi’s claws (his older cat sister).
All this hard work tuckers Kenny out, and as the saying goes ‘all work and no play makes jack a dull boy’, or a dull puppy in this case. That’s why Kenny ensures that he takes time each day to unwind, relax and do something he enjoys. Hockey nights are a perfect example: sit back, relax, and jump up and down when Dad yells ‘c’est le but!’
Kenny has managed to perfect the balance between work and play…have you?
Kenny recently had surgery to remove his unmentionables and during this time he learned the threeKenny had surgery! fundamentals to a healthy and speedy recovery: plenty of fluids, extra rest, and lots of love.

He drank water throughout the day, and instead of sleeping 17 hours a day he bumped it up to 21. Love is Kenny’s favorite tip. He got lots of snuggles and cuddles. He even started sleeping on the bed, and decided the middle was best.

But these three essentials are important for recovery from anything, such as illness or stress. Like when Kenny caught a cold the first time he played in the snow, or when Mummy changes his routine and leaves him with Nana!

And who is Kenny kidding; these fundamentals are good for everyday too!

Hello All! I'm Kenny one of SCT's Mascots with some good advice!

That’s my portrait.. Don’t I look cute!

April 2012 What to eat? What have you got to lose?

Have you noticed that it is becoming more and more confusing to decide what to eat? It seems that a new study or a new fad diet comes out every day. One day we are avoiding too much protein as it’s hard on the kidneys, and then the next we are loading up on protein heavy diets to lose weight. One day we are taking all dairy out of our diet so we are free of congestion, and the next day we are eating yogurt three times a day to improve our colon health. Are you confused?

Have you noticed that it is becoming more and more confusing to decide what to eat? It seems that a new study or a new fad diet comes out every day. One day we are avoiding too much protein as it’s hard on the kidneys, and then the next we are loading up on protein heavy diets to lose weight. One day we are taking all dairy out of our diet so we are free of congestion, and the next day we are eating yogurt three times a day to improve our colon health. Are you confused?

Over the years I worked as a naturopath, I found that diets and fad diets were occasionally useful but most of the time left people out of balance. So, I developed Nutrition 101 to help people learn to eat well and follow a balanced diet. Whether you want to maintain a healthy weight or lose a few pounds, understanding what our bodies need to ingest and paying attention to how we feel when we have eaten is in my opinion the key to healthy body weight.

This month I’ve spent some time with people on what I call ‘fad diets’. That is, diets that cut calories to less than

1000 a day and cut out one particular food group. When we cut down our calories to a very low level (seriously, one friend of mine is currently ingesting under 500 calories a day while working out!) our body goes into ketosis. This means that we use our stored energy and we lose weight. The question is, whether this is healthy for us. Initially, we get a sense of euphoria from it, which people attribute to increased energy. It’s actually a body function from ancient times ~ we get energized to find more food because we are starving ourselves. When we go back to normal eating, the weight goes back on faster than ever as the body celebrates not starving!

Quite simply, removing one particular food group from our diet can lead us into ill health through unbalance. We don’t get the body’s nutritional requirements met unless we eat from all the food groups.

So, what should we do? Perhaps you are looking to lose a few pounds, or you’d like to be healthier or you’d simply like to stop being confused. I recommend that you take the Nutrition 101 course. It’s experiential, which means that while you study and learn you are guided to record your nutritional experiences. Take this course to help yourself and to help your family and loved ones. It’s easy to follow and learn and you’ll be able to take charge of your eating habits.

In the meantime here are some of my tips to make eating right easier:

  1. Drink more water. We often confuse hunger and thirst, so drink your water, hydrate your body and see if you need to eat as much.
  2. Take a daily multi-vitamin. Make it a good quality one from food sources.
  3. Eat a rainbow. Make sure your plate has various colors on it. Food colors represent nutritional components.
  4. Eat fruit and veggies daily.
  5. Eat a variety of foods. Make sure you eat from all the food groups.
  6. And the most important! Slow down and enjoy your food. Don’t eat while you drive, while you watch TV or standing in the kitchen because you are in a hurry. Paying attention to what you eat cuts calorie intake like nothing else.

As our food supply is being chemically changed and modified you owe it to yourself to take charge of your eating habits. Want to go a step further? Then start today on one of our Feeling Absolutely Fabulous revolutionary new weight loss programs. So start today! What have you got to lose?

Get to Know Your Body

The human body is a wonderfully complex structure, and despite its complexity works wonderfully well most of the time. That many of us feel helpless in the face of illness or disease reveals a lack of understanding of how the human body works. When we work to develop a relationship with ourselves holistically: body, mind, spirit and emotions, we can impact our relationship to dis-ease and to illness.

Dr. Andrew Weil in his book Health and Healing says “All living things consist of one or more cells. Each cell can live independently of the rest and cells can arise only from other cells. This implies that those parts of our bodies that live–that eat, breathe, move about, and reproduce do so only through the cells…if physiology seeks to discover how living things work, it must ultimately express the explanations in terms of cellular activity.”

The cell is the basic structure of all tissues, organ and body systems. The body contains hundreds of different types of cells: the long spindly muscle cells, the round red blood cells, the sperm cells with their tales, the nerve cells with their dendrites and axons. However, in spite of their different shapes and functions, each cell has essentially the same composition.

The cells make up the organs. The human body is made up of many organs, and the majority of organs work together in organ systems. Each system in turn depends for its own effectiveness on the proper functioning of the other systems. In short term, the cardiovascular system is the one that keeps us alive, and therefore may be called THE MOST IMPORTANT, but for long-term survival the body needs all of its systems to function effectively and in harmony. All systems are vital to human survival.

You can read lots of information about how cells are impacted by different things, including our thoughts, feelings and emotions. They are impacted by what we eat, breathe, sense and feel. However, that same sense of helplessness occurs whenever we are faced with something going wrong!

There are a number of ways to combat this sense of helplessness, and I believe that education is the key. The more you can learn about how your body works, the better idea you have to prevent things going wrong; and if they do breakdown or you become ill, you have a better idea of how to get better!

There are of course different ways to educate yourself, and I’m not suggesting that you have to know everything. A sense of general knowledge, for instance: knowing where your organs are, knowing how the cells work, understanding what the basic organs systems do and feeling comfortable in knowing what does what in your own body.

Muscle cramps!

Recently I was asked about muscle cramps and what it means ~ that awful ‘charley horse’ feeling that occurs in a muscle. When a muscle engages or contracts, it shortens. A spasm is an involuntary contraction of a muscle and you just can’t simply will it to relax!

Muscles spasm when the normal balance of potassium and sodium (electrolytes) in the muscle cells is disturbed for a longer period of time than the muscles usually can handle. So, even something like a Reflexology session can cause muscle spasms as the circulation is improved during the treatment.

There are a number of things that may contribute to an imbalance of electrolytes:

  •  Dehydration, from inadequate fluid intake or excessive sweating
  •  Vigorous exercise, especially if you don’t stretch before and after
  • Potassium and/or calcium deficiency

So why may a cramp occur during a foot reflexology session?

Muscles that have been overly taut for a period of time, including the lower leg and sole of the foot, relax during a reflexology session. This may disrupt the electrolyte balance and may cause a muscle to cramp.

If you are a Reflexologist and this happens when you are giving a treatment, the first thing is ‘don’t panic”. The solution is simple. To relax any muscle in the body, you actively engage the antagonistic or opposing muscle, which will increase circulation to the affected muscle and allow it to lengthen and relax. If you are receiving a Reflexology treatment and this happens to you, relax, breathe and allow the trained professional to take care of you.

What I do when a Reflexology client on my table cramps up is to immediately place the palm of my hand on the dorsal side of their foot and ask them to strongly pull their foot towards their face (dorsi-flex). At the same time my hand resists their motion, attempting to pull their foot towards my face (plantar-flex). Obviously, this is done with sensitivity to the flexibility of the client, which I have assessed at the very beginning of the treatment session. This combined action engages the foot flexor muscles and lengthens the extensor and intrinsic foot muscles. The hold is held for a couple of seconds and then both the client and I relax our efforts. We immediately do it again, and continue to repeat the sequence of engagement and relaxation until the cramping stops (usually three or four repetitions is all it takes).

I was recently told of an acupressure to alleviate cramping. While performing the movements described above, you wuld ask your client to apply pressure with their index finger between their lip and nose, two-thirds of the way up and to hold that point firmly until the cramp subsides. I haven’t tried it yet, but am game next time this happens!

Adequate hydration, regular foot reflexology, massage of the muscles that tend to cramp, a diet high in potassium and calcium, and daily stretching can prevent the re-occurrence of muscle cramps. And my personal favorite, drink a glass of carrot juice each day until your condition improves ~ seriously! Carrot juice contains all types of electrolytes and is yummy. I’ve even encouraged clients to drink a cup before bed to fix their night cramps.

So now you know how to fix those pesky muscle cramps!

The Business of Being Well

An interview with Carol Hawksley, SCT Instructor (Retired) and Wellness Facilitator
By Deborah Dunleavy

It has always fascinated me that there are so many ancient ways of keeping well and yet in our modern world of ‘bigger is better’ and ‘more begat more’, we seldom find time from our stressful lifestyles to take care of our own personal health.
Wellness Facilitator, Carol Hawksley, makes the study and practice of the Healing Arts a way of life that is nurturing, inspiring and encouraging her clients to choose healthier, happier and more productive lives.

‘What made you decide to become a wellness facilitator?’
When I started my business ten years ago, I was offering a variety of services including Reflexology. Therapeutic Touch, Infant Massage Instruction, Relaxation Massage and Leisure Workshops. Somewhere inside of me my sense was that the list would not stop there.
There were so many wonderful treatments and techniques emerging that my interests and imagination were swirling. When thinking about a name for my business I wanted something that would reflect what I offered not only in the beginning but also as my services expanded.
I started to look at commonalities, what was the common thing that I was offering. Some of what I offered was ‘hands on’, some was education and information, some was about relaxation and stress reduction, some was about improved health.
As all of this began to come together, it seemed to me to be about improving wellness. In addition to this, my belief is that I’m not ‘doing something to the person’ rather we are doing something together. The clients take an active role, even if it seems they are just passively lying there receiving a treatment. I’m only facilitating or helping them so their bodies can do what they naturally want to do and are able to do.
The more I looked at what I had to offer and the more I thought about what my belief about my roles was, the more I saw the words ‘wellness’ and ‘facilitator’ emerging. It was not that I saw the ‘job description’ of a Wellness Facilitator and then decided to pursue a career in that direction. But rather I recognized my beliefs as well as my training and expertise and the term ‘Wellness Facilitator’ seemed to invent itself.

‘Offering reflexology treatments is a large part of your healing work. How does it work?’
How does reflexology work? What a good question. Even though reflexology has been around for over 5,000 years, and even though we have so many wonderful modern testing techniques and equipment, there still is not an answer to your question. However, I can explain a bit about the different systems involved.
To begin, there are reflex points on the feet that seem to be linked with our entire body structure, so all of the glands and organs and body areas have specific reflex areas represented on the feet. Another system is called Zone or Zonal therapy. This was the early forerunner from which modern reflexology was developed.
There are ten zones running vertically from head to toes as well as down the arms to the fingers. Each strip or ‘zone’ is numbered with the big toe and thumb #1, through to the little toe and little finger as #5. It would appear that by working a toe, everything in the body in that corresponding zone is activated.
As well, there are points on the toes and fingers that correspond to the Meridian system. That is the same meridian system that acupuncture is based on.

‘I understand you were at the top of your class with 99% upon completion of your original foot reflexology course. What other training have you taken?’
I began therapeutic touch training in 1992 finishing all three levels and the other requirements to become a Recognized therapeutic Touch Practitioner and a member of the therapeutic Touch Network of Ontario (TTNO)  in 1998. As a requirement to maintain that designation, I attend a minimum of eight hours continuing Therapeutic Touch specific training per year, as well as attend a monthly Practice Group.
In 1999 I received my certification as an Infant Massage Instructor through the International Association of Infant Massage. This specific technique is taught in over thirty countries around the world. It is a form of massage that combines aspects of East Indian massage, Swedish Massage, Yoga and Reflexology.

‘How do you teach Infant Massage to parents?’
I give the instructions while demonstrating with a doll and parents massage their babies. They learn not only about massage strokes, but also a little bit about anatomy, respect, and how to read their baby’s communication cues.
This technique helps to calm the baby, stimulate growth, and improve such things as sleep, digestion, and elimination. The whole family benefits from the instruction. Parents say they feel more confident in their role as a parent. This, in turn, has a spin off affect on the rest of the family, both immediate and extended, because if the baby and parents are more relaxed and healthier, everyone around them is also more relaxed and happier.

‘How do you use massage with adults?’
My training for relaxation massage is les formal. I took a basic introduction course on ‘Swedish Massage’ and I have gained experience while treating several Registered Massage therapists. I also continue to do extensive reading. What I offer is ‘Relaxation Massage’ for clients strictly for relaxation purposes. If anyone asks for a treatment of a specific condition, I refer them to a Registered Massage Therapist.
Learning, for me, is ongoing and takes many forms. Part of my less formal learning is receiving services from others. Learning how other people do things and how I feel in receiving a service helps me to be a better therapist for my clients.

‘What other courses have enriched you work?’
For years I have had a fascination and an interest in crystals and stones, firstly because of their beauty—nature is amazing. Then I learned how their different properties could be helpful to my clients.
The School where I took my original reflexology course, the Holistic Foot Reflexology with the School of Complementary Therapies (SCT) [at the Ottawa satellite,] was offering an Advanced Reflexology course called Crystal Reflexology. This course taught about the properties of various stones and crystals and how to use them in different ways during a reflexology treatment.

‘I’ve always wondered how crystals work. Can you explain this?’
Quartz crystals vibrate to a certain frequency. That is why they have been used in ‘quartz’ watches for years. Other stones and crystals have different ‘vibrational’ frequencies. The crystal frequencies seem to assist the body in harmonizing its own frequencies, in other words, bringing the body functions back into harmony and balance.
The use of crystals seems to deepen the person’s experience of a reflexology treatment with some people saying it feels almost like they have had a double reflexology treatment.

‘How do you keep up to date with your work?’
I have taken many other courses through SCT. The School offers Reflexology Refresher Days where participants have an opportunity to both give and receive reflexology treatments from other practitioners which is a great learning experience.
Also, on those days, information about current topics, legislation and other relevant subjects are presented. These days are open to all reflexologists and all reflexology students from all schools, so my knowledge base is broadened way beyond just one single school or one teacher’s perspective.
Another valuable course through SCT that I took was Anatomy and Physiology. This broadened my understanding of the body’s structure and how it works.
It is amazing how the different aspects of all of my training connect. Aspects of reflexology help me to better understand Infant Massage and vice-versa. The Anatomy and Physiology [course] helped me to better understand the workings of all my other training and the other training helped me to better understand the Anatomy and Physiology course.

‘Do you see yourself as a teacher?’
It wasn’t until sometime during 2003-2004, that people started telling me that I would make a great teacher. At first it seemed to be just a comment in response to how I conduct my sessions. I have always tried to pass along bits of education to my clients to help them learn more about the service they are receiving and a bit more about themselves.
But then I realized I had been a teacher for years. When I was in my teens I taught figure skating. That teaching continued for many years both as an amateur coach and then as a professional coach. During that time the Canadian Coaching Certification program came into being, so I took three Levels of that training.
Over the years I have incorporated teaching into many aspects of previous employment and volunteerism. So it made sense that I became a Certified Reflexology Teacher with the School of Complementary Therapies. I am authorized by SCT to teach Holistic Foot Reflexology, Reflexology Refresher DaysIntroduction to Reflexology for Registered Massage Therapists, Crystal Reflexology, Anatomy and Physiology, Holistic Hand Reflexology and Magic Wand Workshop.

‘How does Magic Wand work?”
The Magic Wand workshop is not about capital ‘M’ magic but it is more about putting the small ‘m’ magic back into our busy hectic lives. It is a way to look at what is important to us and a gentle reminder of ways to focus on those important aspects of ourselves.

‘How do you keep inspired?’
I am always seeking out new techniques and new information. Recently, I trained at the fusion School of Natural health in a course on Ayurvedic head Massage. This is an East Indian technique that is over 1,000 years old and it is still practiced in many Indian households as a weekly home treatment.
I am now certified as an Ayurvedic Head Massage Practitioner and am teaching the practice to others.

“Ayurvedic head massage. Now that sounds interesting. Who could benefit from this?’
Anyone could benefit from Ayurvedic Head Massage. In East Indian traditional homes it has begun at birth. Certainly the extent of massage done with a newborn would be minimal, but none the less aspects are used from birth.

‘I think I can see a link here.’
Yes. Remember earlier I was talking about how all of my training seems to be connected. The Infant Massage course now includes information about how newborns in India have their heads and bodies massaged using certain oils that enhance growth.

‘You have shared your experience and knowledge by teaching Advanced Reflexology both locally and in other parts of the province [of Ontario]. How many people have you trained?’
I am not sure of the numbers as I have lost track over the years, but in this region I have trained people in Barry’s Bay, Ottawa, Brockville, Athens, Cardinal, Addison, Kemptville, North Augusta, just to name a few. In Norwestern Ontario I have had about fifteen students in several different communities.

‘How do you see your role in the community of reflexologists?’
My role in the community of reflexologists, I believe, is that of both teacher and students. We are all unique with unique combinations of learning. In effect, we are all teachers and students at the same time.

‘You are quite active in your community and have received recognition for your contributions in the business sector. How does it feel to be recognized by your peers?’
For eight years I was a member of the 1000 Islands (Brockville) Business Network International Chapter. This experience was invaluable. I learned many, many things, both about business and about myself personally.
The purpose of this group is to encourage networking as a way to promote business. Networking is the fastest growing marketing technique used today. In 2004 and 2005, my peers saw fit to nominate me as Notable Networker.
The criteria included such aspects as positive attitude, attendance, number of referrals to other businesses, attending training and holding offices within the Chapter, as well as generally promoting the concepts of networking.
I was absolutely amazed that others in the group considered me with such high regard. You know we go through life doing what feels right and trying to help and make a difference, but we very rarely find out what impact we have on other people and even rarer do we find out what others think of us. Those awards mean a lot to me because they say that I helped to make a difference to people’s businesses and personal lives.

‘How do you know that your wellness work is having a positive effect? Can you think of one special situation where someone made a break through?’
I get feedback from people almost on a daily basis. Of the reflexology treatments, people remark about improved sleep, more energy, improved digestion and elimination, reduced stress, and reduced aches and pains. People often comment, after some interruption to their usual weekly or bi-weekly treatment schedule that their body began telling them that it was time for another treatment.
With Infant Massage, I occasionally see past families. They are always excited to tell me how the massage they learned and continue to give to their babies, and any additional babies they have, has made such a difference in the lives—more connectedness, more confidence, and healthy and happy babies.
My workshops are so numerous from short presentations to more lengthy personal journeys, but, one recent correspondence gave me great pleasure. This person attended the ‘Discover Your Passion’ Workshop.
I had known the person for several years but in a more personal/social environment. I thought I knew this person and I thought here participation in this workshop would just be a fun day where she could play and focus on herself. Well you know what happens when we think we ‘know’ something.
This workshop was very powerful for this person, helping her to gain much personal insight. Her note talked about how a few simple statements and concepts had such a profound affect helping her to move forward.
One of the things I believe in is self-care. This does not mean to care only for yourself at other people’s expense, but rather to care for yourself so you have energy to give to others. I always come back to that safety demonstration done on airplanes where they tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself first before you put it on anyone with you, in your care. You have to be healthy to be able to give to others.

‘Where have you offered your wellness seminars?’
Many place. I have been asked to present in various locations from a Massage Therapists class at a school in Ottawa where I presented a seminar on Introduction to Meditation, to a women’s day in Spencerville where I presented a workshop on Self-Care. At the YMCA in Brockville I gave a seminar on Personal Power and another one on the importance of leisure activities.

‘Why are leisure activities important?”
There have been many studies done on the importance of leisure activities in a person’s life. In fact, results have shown that the amount of time a person spends engaged in leisure activities away from the usual ‘work’ lives is directly linked to their increased creativity, their increased productivity, and their increased income. Who would guess that play can be so powerful.

‘What keeps you going as a wellness facilitator?’
Passion and fascination. I continue to be fascinated by how this simple technique of a sequence of strokes done on the feet or hands can affect such wonderful changes in the body. Over and over people tell me their stories of how helpful reflexology is for them. As well, I make sure I receive reflexology on a regular basis. I learn how helpful it can be for me. This fascination and constant learning fuels my passion.

‘You are offering a new workshop called ‘Leaping Lizards’. What is it?’
‘Leaping Lizards’ is designed for people in transition in their lives, whether they are leaving their existing employment or looking for new ways to use their gifts, talents and abilities. It may be they are entering a new phase of their lives or have a desire to explore innovative ways of expressing their visions and creative selves.
In this workshop the participants have an opportunity to enter into creative explorations and to discover individual potential for enriching their lives.

What Color Can Do for YOU

What color can do for you: This March we are going to be celebrating the first Color Therapy Month. Color Therapy has been with us since the beginning of time. Intuitively we apply color to our lives and color therapy takes this to a conscious level. Time spent enjoying nature lifts our spirits and this is one way we enjoy embracing color therapy into our lives. Another is when you pick your clothing, choose the colors that surround you in your home and work place. You can see a trained therapist or easily become your own color therapist. Let me explain further:

All things manifested in our Universe vibrate at varying frequencies. This is known as energy. Energy is the basis of all life and a vital factor in healing.

Your preference of one color over another is based on how it makes you feel. Cultural effects, personal preferences derived from life and past-life experiences all play a part in our personal reaction to colours. There are however, generalities to how we react to colors that defy cultural and personal boundaries, even visual handicaps and blindness.

Light is absorbed by the eye, then converted to another form of energy allowing us to see colour. Color is vibration, energy: the same energy that makes up the Universe.

All energy has a vibration and emits a frequency. Every organ, gland and each cell making up the human body has a set frequency vibration for optimum health and well-being. Sickness, disease, ill-health of any kind in body, mind, spirit or emotions is the off-frequency vibration of the particular energy form. For example, as someone who works with Energy Medicine if we look at aches and pains in the body we see that part of the body as being out of balance. That is the frequency is off or the energy vibration is not tuned to optimum health but to ill-health.

Simply, Light-work, Energy Medicine, and CAM are believed to stimulate and revitalize this natural energy flow. Color as a Therapy is an energy medicine. Health is based on the harmonious flow of energies. Both zone therapy, which has until recently been the primary basis of Western CAM studies, and meridian therapies from the East, are based on the premise that energy channels or pathways pass throughout the body, linking organs and body parts.

Color Therapists address the changes in vibration that cause stress on the body.

Each color of the spectrum has its own vibration, or wave-length. By using color the Color Therapists assist themselves and others in maintaining health by reducing stress on the body, mind, emotions and spirit. The vibrations of the body are altered to a frequency inducing health, well-being and harmony.

Color Therapists may use color lamps or gels, guided visualization and hypnotherapy, meditation, colored clothes, colored lights, colored oils, or a combination of a number of these methods of vibrational application. In addition, other therapies may be used simultaneously, including Reiki, Reflexology, Massage and Lifestyle Counselling and Coaching.

If you have ever wanted to learn Color Therapy, then our Level One course is a great place to start. We are currently offering it for only $75, so let’s get started:

Creativity and Expression~Color Therapy Level One

Introduces the student to exploration of the psychological/physiological effects of color and expands through a series of exercises and journaling the impact of color on all aspects of our being. Includes an analysis of personal color preference through various interpretations, and color meditation. The course then explores the effects of color as traditionally used in various cultures to promote health and wellness. Detailed information about the chakra system and using colors with crystals further expands student knowledge. By following the assignments and journalling you learn how to tap the creative hemisphere of your mind while allowing your analytical mind to take a time out.

The emphasis is on personal growth, having fun with color and learning how to use color to improve personal health and well-being. Holistic practitioners will find many useful ways to add Color Therapy to their professional practice. In addition, this first step may stimulate you to continue studying, leading to full certification in Color Therapy.

In an age like ours, colour is not the luxury it was in past centuries. We are inundated by manufactured colour–surrounded, immersed, swimming in a sea of colour. Because of sheer quantity, colour is perhaps in danger of losing some of its magic. I believe that using colour in drawing and painting helps us to recapture the beauty of colour and to experience once again the almost hypnotic fascination it once had for us.” [1]

RRPr (Registered Reflexology Practitioner)

RRPr is a certification mark federally registered and valid throughout Canada. When a Reflexologist displays their RRPr designation you know they have trained to defined standards for the profession of reflexology as established by a governing board and recognized by the federal government of Canada. SCT was a founding member of the registering body and continues to play an active role in promoting Reflexology in Canada.

At SCT we define Reflexology as ‘a specific bodywork technique, where the therapist strokes, massages and applies pressure to the feet, hands and/of face to effect changes in the body, relax muscles, and stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal itself.’

A Reflexology treatment session causes an increase in blood flow to organs and helps the body to eliminate toxin build-ups. The lymphatic and endocrine systems are stimulated while a state of relaxation is induced. Both sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous systems come to balance and natural feel-good hormones called endorphins are released. Scientific sources indicate that an increase in production of endorphins reduces the body’s stress response and causes feelings of well-being.

On the holistic or CAM level, the internal energy lines that flow through the body are cleared and the body returns to energetic balance. This in turn is believed to allow optimal nervous system functioning.

Sounds good? And it feels even better! A good Reflexology session will leave you feeling rested and refreshed, ready to tackle the world again. Regular Reflexology as part of a wellness program has been indicated to help alleviate a huge number of symptoms of bodily dis-ease, emotional distress and even spiritual anguish.

Learning to be a practitioner and becoming a professional Reflexologist is truly a gift, to yourself and to others. The pleasure we receive from helping others and the positive results we see give us a sense of validation and meaning in life. Professional Reflexologists are now working from their home, travelling to clients, opening clinics, working for mall outlets, practicing in spas and holistic clinics, working in nursing homes and hospices with palliative care: the opportunities are endless. There has never been a better time to start your professional practice in Reflexology. Join us and enroll now!

Pregnancy and Reflexology ~ yes or no?

Is Reflexology safe in all trimesters for baby and mom? Also if you work the reproductive system, does it trigger contractions in the first or second trimester?

Reflexology improves circulation and helps the body normalize, so is always considered a safe therapy. Therefore it may be used during pregnancy."Pregnancy|Reflexology|SCT| Alternative Therapies"

Quite simply, if there was a magic button on the foot that would induce a spontaneous abortion, then we would have found it by now and women would not have suffered as they have over the years.

The reproductive reflexes and meridians may be tender as the body is undergoing changes, so gentle pressure is highly recommended. I have even seen ‘puffy’ reflexes; uterus and ovaries. The foot is truly a mirror of the body!

That said, if someone is nervous about having a treatment at any stage through their pregnancy, then you should NEVER press them to have a Reflexology. Sometimes the body knows things that we don’t and sometimes intuition is kicking in. Offer something else instead. I’ve found both moms-to-be and babies love Reiki. And of course, hypnotherapy has been used for years to alleviate distress during both pregnancy and labor.

Reflexology in the last trimester is fabulous for reducing oedema and easing discomfort. And it’s great to look after yourself before baby arrives, because once baby is here…LOL!

So, yes to Pregnancy and Reflexology!

Get off your butt!!!

Easy Fitness Tip
Did you know that to be considered moderately active you only need to exercise for 2.5 hours a week. That can be as simple as one hundred and fifty minutes of brisk walking. A recent study in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health indicated that dog owners who walk their dogs are 34 percent more likely to be be physically fit than people who don’t.
When we are physically fit we look great and feel great!

I have adopted a rescue dog, Eddy. We go for at least one half hour walk each day, and some days as it feels so good we go for two. And on the weekends we often make it three! Eddy is happy. I’m happy. And we are both looking good and feeling great! Woohoo!

How to Make and Use a Healing Crystal Grid

Energy is the basis of all life and a vital factor in healing."Crystal Grid| Schoolof CT|Crystal Reflexology"So, what is energy? The things around us may appear to be solid but in fact they are not. Once we get past the molecules and atoms and look at the spaces between them we get to the basis of all things: energy. The spaces vibrate and the vibration is called energy. Under a sophisticated microscope everything appears as a swirling vibration. This vibration is energy and all is made of the same thing: energy. This is known and proven scientifically by the relatively new field of study called Quantum Physics. However, this is not a new idea. Einstein’s theory of relativity expressed as E=MC2. This can be explained as mass, light and everything we perceive equals energy. Energy is everything.Confusing? Begin with the concept of looking at it all: universe, galaxy, planet, individuals, organ systems, cells, molecules, atoms then energy. There are a lot of levels to talk about things on, but it all comes down to energy.A crystal or crystalline solid is a solid material whose constituent atoms, molecules, or ions arranged in an orderly repeating pattern extending in all three spatial dimensions. They grow in the earth and have taken thousands of years to manifest as the beautiful crystals we use for jewelry. The natural pulsation of energy is used in watches, quartz, to keep time. However, in holistic healing crystal properties are used to enhance healing energy. The following instructions on how to make a crystal grid are based on my Reiki teachings. But we all have inherent healing energy and you make use your own intent to use healing energies. Have fun and enjoy playing with crystal energy!A grid may be made of crystals, and charged with Reiki or other healing energies. The grid will continue to send Reiki or healing energy to heal, protect, or manifest a goal for 48 hour or longer after it is charged. This grid can also be used by your guides and higher self as a bridge to send healing."Crystal Reflexology|School of Complementary Therapies"

To make the grid you will need seven small generator crystals (about 1 ½” Long) and one larger crystal (about 3 to 6″ long). Choose the crystals with the intention of using them in the grid, and allow your intuition to guide you. Clear your crystals before use, either by placing them in sea salt for 24 hours, or leaving them in the sunshine for a day, burying them in the Earth for up to three days. After clearing, bless them by saying a prayer over them. Charge each crystal individually with Reiki or healing energy for at least 10 minutes.

Choose six of the small crystals that seem to be of similar energy and place them at equal points around a 12″ circle, pointing inward. This will create a hexagon or six-sided figure. Place the seventh crystal in the center of the circle. The center crystal can also be a small cluster, a double terminator, a pyramid, or a crystal ball. Use whatever feels right.

This arrangement, when charged, will maintain the Reiki or healing energy but it must not be disturbed. If the crystals are moved or shaken the energy pattern is disrupted. For this reason, it is a good idea to glue the crystals in place, using rubber cement. Alternately, you may wish to use a bed of sand to hold them in place. A ceramic planter tray with some sands works really well.

The next step is to charge your grid with the master crystal. Charge this master crystal with Reiki or healing energy the same as the others. Then hold it in your right hand and begin drawing out pie-shaped sections above the grid imagining energy coming from the master crystal and charging the grid. Start with the center crystal and move to an outer crystal, then to the next outer crystal in a counter-clockwise direction. Then in the to the center crystal, out to the same crystal, counter-clockwise to the next outer crystal, and so on until you have completed the whole grid. As you do this repeat an affirmation or mantra of power, such as: ‘I empower this grid with light, with light, with light; to heal, to heal, to heal. I empower this grid with love, with love, with love and wisdom, wisdom, wisdom; to heal, to heal, to heal. I call on my highest spiritual guides now to attune to this grid of light, light, light to heal, heal, heal; with love, love, love.’ Feel free to use whatever empowering affirmation you are drawn to use. and if you like, include a prayer.

Meditate with your master crystal each day and use it to charge your Crystal Healing grid each day. For your grid to remain activated you must work with it regularly. You may meditate or pray with your master crystal to charge it with Reiki or healing energy.

In addition, if you have Reiki training you may choose to place a picture of yourself on the grid, drawing the Reiki symbols on the back. This will send a continuous flow of Reiki energy to you as long as you have charged your grid. You may add pictures of friends, family or clients who need healing energy. There may be a limit on how may pictures you can place in the grid without ‘over-loading’ the energy capacity. Use your intuition to know how much you can do at one time.

If you need to send someone some healing energy or Reiki and you do not have a photo, you write their name on a piece on paper and place this in the grid. It is sometimes helpful to add personal information about the person such as birth date, address, or even data such as a phone number or their sun sign. Think of it as identifying them to the universe. This has the capacity to ‘identify’ the person, or to select them, specifically for the energy transfer.

Keep your crystal grid in a safe place where it won’t be disturbed.

This is a great project to do with children to teach them about healing with crystals and focusing their intent. You may even find that you learn from the children! They are often much more in tune with their intuition than we are.

Have fun with your crystals and if you would like to learn more, we have an excellent course on Crystal Reflexology which explains about the various crystals and how to use them with the healing art of Reflexology.

Stay Fabulous!

Color for Health-Healing with Colors and Crystals

Color for Health-Healing with Colors and Crystals

Have you heard people saying ‘there’s nothing new’? It does seem that everything we discover has its roots or beginnings somewhere else. When we are looking at, using or studying complementary and alternative therapies the same applies. Modern medicinals and drug therapies have a direct connection to many herbal therapeutic practices. Massage and Reflexology have been documented over the ages. The impact of color on our health and well-being is not an exception.

Our first indications of how color was used as a therapy was the ancient art of gem or crystal therapy. Stories are told of how Crystal Therapy dates all the way back to Atlantean and Lemurian times, right up to today’s relatively common practice of wearing gems to enhance well-being and health. Simply described gem or crystal therapy works by using particular colored gem to effect health and well-being through their color. There are many books available on this subject, which go into a great deal of information, but generally speaking color effects well-being through vibration.

Everything in the known Universe vibrates; the basis of all life being energy. This is now commonly accepted and yet, using vibrational healing methods is still considered by many to be ‘out there.’

The most commonly asked question I receive is ‘how can color affect the body?’ A simple answer is that each color of the spectrum has a vibration, while each organ, gland and part of the body has a set vibration for health and wellness. The application of a color vibration, in the form of a colored light, gem or crystal application or simply the clothes we choose to wear, can bring an out-of-balance part of the body back into vibrating at a healthy frequency. However, with each individual case or health condition there may be various answers that give more information. For example, ‘blue-light’ therapy’ as used in hospitals the world over involves putting babies with neonatal jaundice under a blue light. This application of blue light causes a chemical reaction called photo-oxidation. It affects the blood circulating under baby’s skin and with assistance from the liver lessens bilirubin levels. Blue and yellow are opposite or complementary colors. By using the opposite or complementary color to treat a condition, the vibration is brought back to balance and harmony.

Another popular interpretation of color therapy affecting physiology is also by skin exposure to light and that is the production of Vitamin D. The color vibration used is a higher frequency than we can see: ultraviolet. A third example is light energy entering the body through the eyes. The use of light exposure to effect changes in mood, energy and general wellbeing caused by ‘seasonal affective disorder’ or SAD is now very well known. Insufficient light energization through the yes to the hypothalamus in the brain and the pituitary gland which controls the endocrine system results in SAD. The use of full-spectrum lighting improves the condition.

In conclusion, each individual cell in every living organism has a specific function to perform. As each cell has its function it generates and radiates a specific energy. This is often referred to as ‘aura’. Applying color by light, clothing or wearing crystal we can effect healing in the body.

I invite you to learn more and take our Color Therapy Level One course by home-study. This experiential course has lots of practical applications for those who wish to work in holistic health care and for those who are looking for easy ways to maintain or improve their own health and wellness. For those who are curious about Crystal Therapy, then I recommend taking Crystal Reflexology with us; learn about color, crystals and reflexology all in one course.
