Yarn: 1 skein Noro Silk Garden
(or any other worsted weight yarn that gives the same gauge
Needles: Set of 5 US 8 double-pointed needles and one set of 4 US 7 double-pointed needles
(Optional: one size 8 18-inch circular needle and one size 7 16-inch circular needles depending on your knitting preference)
Other Supplies: Tapestry needle and a small stitch-marker
Gauge: 17 inches = 4 inches on larger size needles
Measurement: Approximately 18.5” circumference
Abbreviations: K = Knit; K2tog = knit two stitches together
Getting Started:
With size 8 circular needle or points, cast on 80 stitches. Place stitch marker and join into a round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
Change to size 7 needle/s, knit 3 rounds, purl 1 round.
Repeat these 4 rows once more.
Change back to size 8 circular needle or points and work the following sequence of rounds:
Knit 3 rounds, purl 1 round
Knit 5 rounds, purl 1 round
Knit 7 rounds, purl 1 round
Knit 9 rounds, purl 1 round
Knit 8 rounds.
Decreasing the Crown:
Round 1: *K6, K2tog; repeat from *. You now have 70 stitches.
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: *K5, K2tog; repeat from *. You now have 60 stitches.
Round 4: Knit
Round 5: *K4, K2tog; repeat from *. You now have 50 stitches.
Round 6: Knit
Round 7: *K3, K2tog; repeat from *. You now have 40 stitches.
Round 8: Knit
Round 9: *K2, K2tog; repeat from *. You now have 30 stitches
Round 10: Knit
Round 11: *K2 tog; repeat from *. You now have 15 stitches.
Cut yarn, leaving a 10inch tail. Thread the tail onto your tapestry needle, draw through the remaining 15 stitches. Pull up snug and weave into the hat.
Finishing:
If you wish, make three 4 stitch I-cords (instructions follow) and attach to top of hat. Knot ends. Or make a pom-pom. (I personally don’t bother with either.)
Weave in all the yarn ends.
Woohoo! Your hat is now ready to wear or to give as a gift to a loved-one.
I-Cord:
Using double-pointed needle, cast on 4 stitches.
Knit, don’t turn.
Slip the stitches back to the beginning of the needle and knit the row again.
Continue in this manner. Every few rows pull down on the cord, and the gap at the back will close.
After you have completed 25 rows, break off your yarn, leaving about 10 inches. Thread the yarn through the four stitches and pull firmly. Weave ends into the cord. Sew on top of the hat.
