Advances in science, mechanization and technology have accelerated the pace of our lives from our parents and grandparents’ time. Now we are left with little time for rest, repair and relaxation.
The ancient practice of Yoga releases body tension while strengthening the body.
And now with Kundalini Yoga we can add a dimension of increased healthy sensitivity to our lives.
More often than not, our careers don’t strengthen our bodies, but the opposite. Accordingly, we’ve become mostly sedentary. So we’re not physically as strong as our grandparents.
Furthermore, recent studies indicate that our children are not as healthy + strong as we were.
This is largely due to the amount of time they spend sitting, watching TV or working at the computer. And of course, playing on their phones or laptops. With Kundalini Yoga we can actually achieve a reversal of these conditions!
Mental flexibility is as essential as physical flexibility.
Eastern philosophies remind us Westerners, that the body, mind and spirit are not three separate entities. But they are inter-connected in our whole being. Accordingly, by working one part of ourselves, the whole person benefits. Because by overcoming physical resistance, we overcome mental resistance.
The balancing poses require us to integrate body and mind. This then brings grace to the body along with flexibility and discipline to the mind. By taking this a step further, by bringing peace and well-being into ourselves, we radiate this to others. As they say, heal yourself if you wish to heal the planet.
So, what is Kundalini Yoga?
The practice of yoga includes moving + stationary poses. as well as stretches. Breathing exercise, diet and meditation to tone the mind, body, spirit and emotions. Kundalini Yoga is known as the Yoga of Awareness.
For example, when we inhale we take in oxygen. To fill our lungs and to circulate oxygen throughout the body in the bloodstream we breathe deeply.
In addition to this much needed oxygen the air we breathe is charged with prana.
Prana is Universal Life Force Energy. Each inhalation recharges our energy.
In Kundalini Yoga emphasis is placed on breathwork, or pranayama.
We pay attention to our breath. When we breathe deeply we lower stress. We become calmer and then we take in more prana. This in turn results in increased energy. And our internal organs are massaged, resulting in improved circulation.
Along with breathwork, we chant ‘mantras’. This chanting helps us concentrate on one thing at a time, and we begin to meditate. Meditation allows our mind to clear. And emotions to focus. Life becomes clearer and stress and anxiety become a thing of the past.
